The NatWest Island Games 2011 Water Feature now in Ryde

The water feature from the NatWest Island Games 2011 has now found a final resting place in the recently refurbished Victoria Arcade in Ryde. On Thursday 1st December the sculpted piece, designed and crafted by environmental artist Paul Sivell, was unveiled by Councillor David Knowles, The Mayor of Ryde Town. The 2011 Organising Committee and members of the Town Council were present. The water feature can now be enjoyed by local people and visitors, and will serve as a reminder of a wonderful week when islanders from all over the world visited Ryde.

Thank you to the medal bearers for a job well done!

There have been very many volunteers involved in the NatWest Island Games 2011, and all have played an important part in what we hope has been an enjoyable week. Without them the Games would not have happened.

If you were at any of the medal ceremonies, you may have noticed the presence of some other athletes in their club attire, whose sport is not included in the NatWest Island Games. The Isle of Wight Ice Dance and Figure Skating Club (IWIDFSC) very kindly offered their help and support as Medal Bearers and Victory Ceremony Co-ordinators.
Thank you to the medal bearers for a job well done!

The Wight Way to Win - Mens Football Final – Guernsey vs Isle of Wight

by Sarah Moody

Due to the irregularly large crowd for the Newport FC ground, officials postponed the kick off 15 minutes to allow all fans to get into the ground. This would be the Isle of Wight’s first chance to win this category since 1995.

A very unreliable rumour wandering around the ground – Paul Gascoigne would be joining the fray. A local reporter soon informed us that this was not true and the only Gascoigne she knew attending was a table tennis player.
At 15.17, the match begins, 17 minutes late.

ISLE OF WIGHT WINDSURF TEAM PROFILE

Name: Thomas Francis.
Age: 15.
Occupation: Student at Sandown High School.
Riding style: Wave & Slalom.
Strengths: Being the lightest person on the team Thomas feels that he can thrive on weaker winds.
Weaknesses: Unsure of his abilities in strong winds.

 Personal Info:
Having been born on the island, it wasn’t until his family lived on St Barts in the Carribean that his mother introduced him to windsurfing.  He started learning at seven and had really got into it by the time he was eleven.
As the youngest competitor on the team hasn’t slowed him down – when he was 13 Thomas competed in the French Championships (junior league) and and took first place. Although he lacks extensive experience in such a competitive event, Thomas is optimistic and plans to enjoy the Island Games regardless of results.

Isle of Wight Ladies basketball caught between a Rock and a hard place

Steve Usher

We arrived a little late for this fixture as we had gone to Cowes High School in error. The Wight girls were trailing 13-36 but still in contention. A much-needed half-time break beckons and the red-faced Wight girls are looking forward to it. It is their first time as participants in this event and three of their number are actually netball players.
They have been working hard against a well-organised Gibraltar team whose passing is slick and fast. The Medina Sports Centre’s emergency exit doors are left open to try and cool the court down with limited success. Basketball is a hard, fast game and you need to be able to refill your lungs.
Several collisions see the pony-tailed players tumbling to the floor. Squeegee Boy comes on with his broad mop and makes the court safe again by removing the puddles of sweat before anyone comes a cropper.

Interview with Duncan Goodhew

Duncan Goodhew regards the NatWest Island Games as a ‘stepping-stone’ for athletes competing in future international meetings like the Commonwealth and Olympic Games. Goodhew, making a guest appearance at the games, believes that an event like this will only benefit the islands’ athletes.

We found Goodhew after he had opened the start of the swimming, the sport he is globally known for. He started swimming when his family ‘dug up a tennis court and put a DIYpool in the back garden about three yards long’.  He started swimming properly when the school ‘surgically removed’ his flippers and ‘the rest is history’

Match Report - Isle of Man vs. Guernsey

Guernsey managed to see off the Isle of Man in a feisty game that saw both teams reduced to ten men in Tuesday’s group C match at East Cowes Vics FC.

The game started in a fast and furious fashion with Guernsey taking the game to the Isle of Man. An early cross from Glyn Dyer was cleared away from danger before Dyer managed to break the Isle of Man offside trap after ten minutes, netting after his initial shot was blocked.
