Out and About with the NatWest Island Games Trailer


Members of the Organising Committee and volunteers have been out and about on the Isle of Wight raising awareness of the NatWest Island Games and encouraging people to Get Involved.

The 20ft long trailer has been helping to promote the games at the Garlic Festival and Ryde Carnival Parade during the past week and will be joining the Sandown Carnival parade later this week.

NatWest Island Games Athletes Assist at the Launch of the New 'adiZone'


NatWest Island Games athletes on the local authority gifted and talented programme assisted at the opening of a new local community multi-sports zone in the shape of the London 2012 Olympics logo.

The 'adiZone' was officially opened by Sarah Gosling, one of Britain's most successful Olympic sailors with Cllr Ian Stephens, the Isle of Wight Council Chairman on Sunday 15 August 2010.

Visit from International Island Games Association and AGM


The Isle of Wight played host to representatives from almost all of the 25 member islands of the International Island Games Association (IIGA) and the Executive Committee during a four day visit.

The busy schedule included a tour of most of the sporting venues for the NatWest Island Games XIV in 2011 as well as the accommodation for the competitors.

Over 400 children took part in the Primary School Island Games held on 26 June 2010.

The games are organised by Isle of Wight Council’s sports unit and form an important part of the council’s approach to developing a healthy Island legacy from the hosting of the NatWest Island Games in 2011.

The Isle of Wight archery clubs, Wight Bowman and West Wight Archery, have been granted world record status for the FITA and 720 rounds by Archery UK for the international NatWest Island Games taking place on the Isle of Wight next year.

Date of Closing Ceremony

There seems to have been some confusion over the date of the Closing Ceremony and so we would like to clarify the details.

The Closing Ceremony will be held on Friday 1st July 2011
.

On Saturday 2nd July 2011, the competitors will make their way home to their islands after what we hope will be, a most enjoyable week.

Anti-doping Education

We now have eight trained tutors to work in this important field and all will be in close and regular touch with UK Sport to keep updated.

In line with the requirements of the International Island Games Bye-laws and Operational Guidelines we will be commencing an ongoing programme of education for all competitors and coaches who wish to be considered for selection to represent the Isle of Wight  at both the World Youth Games and the NatWest Island Games.

Isle of Wight athletes are still on a high after returning from the 13th NatWest Island Games in Aland, Finland, with 18 medals.


The biannual competition, is one of the largest participation events in the world behind the Olympics and Commonwealth Games and this year the Isle of Wight team finished 11th in the medals table.

As well as great displays of sporting skill and medal glory, there were also stories of triumph over adversity and gutsy displays against much higher competition.

Official Handover of the NatWest Island Games


The NatWest Island Games flag was officially handed over from Åland to the Isle of Wight at the closing ceremony on 4th July 2009.

The closing ceremony of the 13th NatWest Island Games in Aland proved to be a somewhat wet affair after a week of glorious weather.

Despite the rain, the spirits of the spectators were not dampened as the procession of island representatives came bearing their flags.

Primary School Island Games


Just a week after the 2009 NatWest Island Games XIII in Åland, the primary schools on the Isle of Wight took part in their own version ,‘The Primary School Island Games’,  organised by Isle of Wight Council’s sports unit.

Over 500 children from around the Island took part in the games which saw schools grouped into eight areas, each representing an Island - Cayman Islands, St Helena, Rhodes, Greenland, Menorca, Gibraltar, Western Isles and Bermuda.

Several members of the 2011 NatWest Island Games Organising Committee and Sports Coordinators were in Åland to gather and exchange ideas with their counterparts in the 2009  NatWest Island Games Team.

All of the party took an evening away from their day to day duties however, to host a Reception at the Indigo Restaurant to launch the run up to the 2011 NatWest Island Games.

Island Games Logo Winner Vicky meets Lord Coe


The winner of a competition to design the logo for the NatWest Island Games 2011, travelled to London on Thursday 13th November to meet Lord Coe, Chairman of LOCOG, the London 2012 Organising Committee.

Vicky Law’s design concept was selected from over 50 entries by Island Games Chairman David Ball, Leader of the Council Cllr David Pugh, County Press Editor Alan Marriott and a group of council officers.
