Badminton on  the Isle of Wight

There are currently 12 clubs affiliated to The Isle of Wight Badminton Association (I.O.W.B.A.) and between them they provide 22 teams that play in 3 Divisions. About 250 members play competitively in the leagues.

Throughout the season the I.O.W.B.A. organises several ‘Handicap’ Tournaments including ‘The Mallet Cup’ dating back to 1956 and also one for Veterans. One of the blessings of having a lot of players over the age of 45 is that we are able to enter teams in every age category of the English Veterans leagues. There is of course a Championship Tournament "The Levels" very keenly contested by the Island's top players, Juniors & Seniors alike.

The Association also presents The Yvonne Elsey Award for ‘The Most Promising Junior’ and the Alan Maybey Award for ‘Services to Badminton’

The Isle of Wight enters a team every year in the English Badminton Leagues and is currently playing in the 5th Division South.

We have at present a very enthusiastic Junior Secretary who is responsible for the future development of our star players some of whom may well be up for selection in the 2011 team.
