Athletics on the Isle of Wight

Ryde Harriers is one of the oldest athletics clubs in the country founded in 1886. In the past they have been responsible for all major events held on the island. These days the main thrust is around the road running scene and they continue to be responsible for the Isle of Wight Marathon one of the oldest (and toughest) annual marathons in the country having been competed since 1957. As well as all the other road races they organise and run the Isle of Wight Fell series held each year in September in the Victorian Spa town of Ventnor.

In 1987 South Wight Athletic Club was born to provide centre for the casual road runner as well as a local junior track and field club. The club was destined to grow as the eight lane all weather track facility was built at their base at Sandown High School in time for the 1993 Island Games.

The club joined with the junior section of Ryde Harriers in 1994 to compete as a composite team in the National Young Athletes League. Composite teams are now common place but unheard of at the time and promotion restrictions were imposed by the league organisers. Each club entered the league separately for following two years. The South Wight Club had the advantage of the track being on their doorstep, numbers grew and track and field success followed. In 1997 the club changed its name to Isle of Wight AC and took responsibility for all track and field events on the Island.

Isle of Wight AC develop young athletes and provide competition up to age 20 when athletes are directed to larger club that offer quality league competition. The club is proud of its successes, Andy Frost progressed through the junior rankings with IWAC and is now Britain’s number one Hammer thrower competing for Woodford Green in London. He was the first club member to gain a Great Britain vest and was fourth at the last Commonwealth Games in Australia.
